Title: All that glitters Author: Localfreak Fandom: Harry Potter Ship: Gen. Implied LM/NM Summary: One of my 'What If?' pieces- what if Lucius Malfoy's father lost the family fortune before Lucius was old enough to become a death eater?
“Good morning, Lord Peasgood, how may I be of help today?”
The young heir to the duke flushed at the address, “Oh, I’m just looking, thank you.”
Lucius inclined his head respectfully, “Of course. Should you require any assistance I am here to help,” and he turned away, pretending to busy himself at one of the glass display cases close to the till. Sometimes, when faced with young men like the Peasgood her, Lucius found himself wondering what his life would have been like had his father not squandered everything on that upstart Dark Lord business when Lucius was young.
It had been Lucius’ eye for finery that had brought them back out of near-destitution, his father killed by the madman that he’d served. He’d always been good at charms and a fondness for precious metals but it had been a hard slog, and a harder apprenticeship, for a young man who had, until then been groomed to expect nothing more than managing the estate to be his future occupation.
Narcissa had married him, despite it all, even though it meant turning her back on her family and when she died so soon after Draco was born…well it’d been harder still to keep the shop running, only the desire to push the pain from her death away drove him into his work. Draco was his consolation though and Lucius smiled at the thought of his son, even as he dusted a sapphire brooch with a soft brush. Draco was terribly excited about going to Hogwarts and, though privately Lucius hoped Draco would follow in his parents’ footsteps in Slytherin, Lucius had a feeling Draco might be the first Malfoy to be a Hufflepuff for generations considering how much his son seemed to enjoy the hard work of helping clean and manage the inventories for the shop.
“Um-“
“Yes, Lord Peasgood?”
“How much is that ring there?”
“This? Eighteen hundred, young sir. Diamond and Dragon’s Eye inlaid into white-gold.” Lucius smiled fondly at his creation, “Would you care to see it?”
“Oh, er. Please. Yes.”
Lucius unlocked the cabinet with a flourish, gently levitating the ring onto a soft velvet cloth, kept for just such purposes.
“Mm. Yes. I think this might do.”
“I assume, then congratulations are in order, might I enquire into the identity of the young lady.”
The boy looked all the more awkward, like a child playing dress up, “Lady Violet Nott. I heard she has blue eyes and thought perhaps the dragon’s eye.”
“A perceptive choice, young sir, you are quite correct I feel the dragon’s eye will enhance your lady’s eyes. Do you wish to take it now or shall I have it flooed to you?”
The boy recovers some of his composure, “Floo, if you please. Charge it to my family account for now.”
Lucius permitted himself an understanding smirk, the boy might not be fighting what was obviously an unwanted betrothal, but at least he was showing some backbone by charging it to his father. “Of course, sir.”
“Good day, then.”
“Good day, sir.”
Lucius stared somewhat enviously at the fine cloak, definitely elf-made, probably imported straight from Paris…but then caught himself and chuckled. Despite it all, he couldn’t help but feel that he had the better life.
Disclaimer: I don't own them. If I did I'd be tempted to make this canon even though it would completely eff-up the plot.

Hee, Hufflepuff Draco! Now that I'd like to see :)
I'm sure I've read one....oh- copperbadge's Stealing Harry sequels- Laocoon's Children. That has an awesome Hufflepuff Draco in :)
Oh, oh, oh, that's so LOVELY. I love Lucius's attitude to the whole thing and his happy thoughts about Draco maybe being a Hufflepuff and not being too worried about it. And Lord Peasgood charging it to his father. I love it!
*grins* I'm glad you liked it :D
That's lovely - I like the positive view of the Malfoys and the little bit about him thinking Draco might be a Hufflepuff... and not minding!
*grins* thanks. I love doing this-playing with events and going 'what if this didn't happen- what would it change' I've done it before a time or two such as my Media Lecturer Professor Riddle one and the like.
Media Lecturer Professor Riddle...?
(I probably won't get a response to this as I have to trawl manually through your journal. Any chance you could link me to it via LJ?) |
