Title: Happiness Author: Localfreak Fandom: Harry Potter Ship: AD/GG Summary: Peace may be found in solid academic groundings, but happiness cannot be built on such foundations
They called him Mouse, when he was a child. It was his silence that unnerved them. Even from an early age, he seemed different- more intelligent in some things and yet often, looking back, he wondered if he had truly had the better portion of talents. His brother was not one for academics, but his compassion- his ability to always see people as people, his ability to remember his duties, seemed to have given him happiness, where Mouse had found none.
Once he had thought to find happiness, to find those things that made healthy men whole, in the arms of another man. Shocking, perhaps, but no more shocking than Robbie Ross’ continual presence in the public eye in Muggle London. They had been young, it had been summer, and for once, just for once, Mouse had thought that, perhaps, there was more to life than being clever, for him; that there was a chance to be free of the yoke of his responsibilities.
It was all a lie. A lie he saw only too late and even then, many years past, he avoided meeting Gellert again until there was no possible other option. For he loved him still. Sometimes he wrote letters to him, that Gellert would never read. Sometimes he wished he had never met Gellert, because the world seemed such a lonelier place without him.
Sublimation was the key to keeping his sanity. All his frustrations, his joys, his misery, went into his work- and in his work he found some sort of peace, if not happiness.
Sometimes, however, in his most melancholy of moments, Albus Dumbledore wondered if some people were born to be alone.

Ouch ouch ouch.
(Especially ouch considering my son is known throughout the internets as Mouse.)
Whoops! I had no idea about the latter and mean no offense! I had this idea for a longer fic calling Albus Dumbledore 'Mouse' which stems in a long, convoluted train of thought back to a short story I wrote when I was about 10 (pre-Harry Potter) in which I named a mouse Albus. Though I also like the nickname on its own merit.
*is being very mean to Albus, poor boy*
Awww... that's so sad. I love the linking in of their affair with the history of the time, and the last two sentences feel so true... and so sad. Excellent work.
I can't resist linking Dumbledore in with the time period. If I wasn't so lazy I would love to get round to doing something bigger set in that period I mean...I did some calculations a while ago and I think it was that Dumbledore would have been at Hogwarts when Wilde was Tried.
Thank you very much for reading ^^
Oh. Oh poor Albus. It's so sad, really well done and really well written. Great work. |
