Summary: When Albus Dumbledore defeated the Dark Wizard Grindelwald, no eyewitnesses saw him do it.

When Albus Dumbledore defeated the Dark Wizard Grindelwald, no eyewitnesses saw him do it. Those that were on the scene, including some of Grindelwald’s own servants, reported afterwards under Veritaserum that “a great flash of light” surrounded the two as they fought, a light in which no one could see their hands in front of their faces, and when it cleared the area was scorched, trees looking singed and frazzled a great crater where the two combatants had fought- and Albus Dumbledore, alone, in the centre of it.

No one knew why Dumbledore remained at Hogwarts, but perhaps he felt that for all that people now revered him even more than they had before (or, at least, those in academic circles had), he was just a man who had done what had to be done.

After a leave of absence to recuperate, during which time he travelled to various places across the globe, he returned to teach at Hogwarts. He brought back many curious wonders, a flying carpet, various gew-gaws…and a phoenix.

Well, no one batted an eyelid.

He often talked to the phoenix, stroked its fine feathers, made his plans, confided in it as a man does with a particularly gifted familiar at his side. And Fawkes, the phoenix was certainly a devoted pet to Dumbledore for the rest of his life.

If, in the dead of night, the phoenix would sit on the man’s bed, sorrowfully watching as auburn hair faded into white, as his hands became gnarled, his shoulders hunched, no one could tell what the phoenix was thinking.

Fawkes was thinking of Before. A time when he had hands to touch that worried brow, to taste those lips, to run fingers through Albus’ long hair.

But no one would ever know this.

And when Albus died, Fawkes sang and disappeared in a burst of flame and light.

Fawkes the Devoted Pet

And Gelert, the Dearest Friend.
