08:49 pm So Archibishop Vincent Nichols, who was Archbishop of Birmingham but is Scouser by birth, has been named the new Archbishop of Westminster. I am quite pleased by this. I don't know much about the man, but from the packs he sent round to our dioscece about "accepting all families" (the subtext thereby implied: regardless of how many parents/the sexuality or matrimonial status of said parents) and encouraging people into the community of the Parish rings well with me and if he can keep hold of such sentiments and beliefs when down there in Westminster, and, at a minimum, manages to keep his mouth shut in potentially damaging issues, he'll do a damn sight better than Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has.
The problem, really, for Murphy-O'Connor, is that he, like so many, didn't exactly work out that what the majority of reports want are soundbites- and the more extreme the better. It doesn't matter that, in a Catholic magazine, he outlines the official ideas about homosexuality and points out the kind of knotty issue (I won't go on and on about it but basically the major problem isn't with homosexuality it's with extra-marital sex, particularly when not for the production of children. Generally speaking. And most people don't give a shit.) that's not what's gonna be reported on the radio or the tv. The thing is, as much as Catholicism has a pretty decent place in the UK overall, the most newsworthy articles about Catholics are when one particularly thick eegit decides to spout off something inflammatory.
Someone also told me that the kind of...cultural differences are quite profound too in different schools of thought for priests. I'm not sure how true that is but what I do know is the fact that Archbishop Nichols is from Liverpool. Therefore knew Bishop Malone and probably knows Monsigneur Fleety (<3) and possibly even Fr Peter when he was alive fills me with a good bit of hope. If he manages to be half as sensible, down to earth and generally brilliant as them then the Church may not be newsworthy, but at least it won't be mired in bad press all the time! :D
Today...well...Ferny has had an operation on her backside because of a recurring gland problem and I spent the day looking after her. Poor thing, she's really unhappy and in pain but, in the good of common decency and so as not to put any readers entirely off their food I shall decline to give further details. Discretion being the better part of valour.
