02:15 pm Thought this article on a gay icons display at the national portrait gallery was really interesting. It was cool to see who different people picked (can't believe someone picked Tatchell. Ah well, I suppose he is at least an influential source). I'm glad Turing was on the chosen list and Billie Jean King. Wonder if Dirk Bogarde got on there? After all Victim was hugely influential and very brave of him.
If you had to pick your gay icons (or straight icons, or bi icons, equal opps all round) who would you pick?
It's hard to choose but I think I'd have to include the following:
1. Kenneth Williams 2. A.E Houseman those are definitely my top two although I can think of plenty of others like 3. Siegfried Sassoon 4. Sir Ian McKellen 5. Noel Coward 6. Oscar Wilde (because you really can't not have 'St Oscar, the Martyr') 7. William Shakespeare 8. Kenny Everett 10. Darren Hayes
(I really could go on forever though it gets a little more muddled as to 'am I thinking of them as Icons, in the way I think of Kenneth Williams or A E Houseman, or am I just thinking 'I really like them and they're cool' which isn't exactly the same thing e.g. I adore Elton John's stuff, )
Damn. I'd love to go see the display.
