07:16 pm - God That's Good! Today is my Auntie I's birthday. A lot of us clubbed together to buy her a Wii fit which she seemed pleased with, and Nanny made a marvellous cake.
I was quite busy this morning, having started out for town late. I had to go in to post a letter and buy some vegetables and a new bag of flour, as I used all but a few dregs of the self-raising up yesterday making pastry dough. When I got back from town I got to work in making an apple pie with the apples I'd stewed last night. I'd never made an apple pie before, so this was approached with a certain amount of anxiety. With the leftover pastry I made jam tarts and lemon curd tarts (nom, nom, nom!)
Later, Mum & I went to Nanny's, who'd made scouse for tea, to see Auntie I and wish her Happy Birthday in person. We then had some of my apple pie with custard for afters which everyone said was very well done, much to my pleasure :) and relief. It took ages to light all the candles on the cake! But the cake was delicious as all Nanny's are :) and we had a pleasant couple of hours, before coming home in time to listen to Just A Minute.
I have taken to reading Sherlock Holmes fic, something which I blame lycoris for entirely. I have dabbled in and out of the fandom for some years, but hadn't really given it my full attention since the unexplained demise of The Historical Slash archive. I love reading SH fanfic, because it is, on the whole, better researched and often one finds more fic which is well written without having to trawl through mountains of dross, as one does in other fandoms. Amusingly, however, after a few days I begin to find things to complain about ("Wrong turn of phrase, there." "The term homosexual wasn't common parlance in that year, in that place." "When are you setting this? If it is prior to the Labouchere Amendment then no, technically you are not yet commiting a crime, owing to the loophole in the original law...") items which are niggling, negligable and would likely have been easily passed over in other fandoms, where any research is considerably better than the majority of items available. This goes to prove that I am completely incapable of being satisfied and not nitpicking.
Regardless, I am enjoying the reading. *returns to read more fic* Current Mood: chilly Current Music: Meatloaf-Original Sin

09:38 pm - bloody email Dear Friends/Family
Please, please, please stop sending me forwarded emails about people such as some politician who called for certain groups of Muslims to be banished from their country, or that WRETCHED American sherriff who does dehumanising things to the inmates of his prison (including giving them sub-standard food).
I find their actions ABHORRENT IN THE EXTREME, particularly the latter and every time I get a forward describing their actions in glowing, salutory terms I feel a tiny bit sick at the thought that you might actually agree with such things that I find offensive and criminal in the extreme. (Feeding prisoners sub-standard food is a regression to a punitive penal system, which is cruel and, to my views, immoral. Depriving prisoners of adequate resources and nutrition is not going to do anything but make their lives miserable, and more wretched. That, indeed, is the aim. And REVENGE/RETRIBUTION leaves a foul, foul taste in my mouth. *rants*)
So, yeah. Next time you're sending round these disturbing messages, look at who your sending to and think "will the socialist-semi-pacifist-Roman-Catholic-friend/relation actually agree with this? Or will they look at it and have a moment of intense disgust that I would agree with such Daily-Mail-ish behaviours? Will it offend him?"
The answers are No, Yes and Yes. So don't send. Please don't.
I respect your right to have a different opinion on such things than me, but I find it upsetting to be confronted by such things.
yrs, with luv,
