11:41 am - Fandom Musing Why is it, in HP fandom, every half-bit fic writer not only fancies themself a poet (and delights in filling the place with un-checked and un-restrained doggerel) but always makes prophecies rhyme. None of Trelawney's prophecies in the canon rhyme. They have a caedence, which the italic font and textual layout helps to create but they are not, really, poetry at all. I think that's one of the reasons I like them in the books- they are unpretentious prophecies. Like poetry, they have a sparsity of words- none are fatuous, but they're not big epic rhymes (let alone badly written rhymes) like the ones I keep falling over in fic.
